Subject: 3 Crucial Keys to Preventing Alzheimer's

Hi thanks for reading,

It's estimated that in 2025 there are 7.2 million people living with Alzheimer's dementia. This number is up from 5.1 million affected in 2015. We're focusing on Alzheimer's prevention today and there are a number of factors that contribute to the disease. Nutrition plays a vital role and the 3 keys below have been shown to lower your risk and help you to live not only longer but a better quality of life as well.

Key # 1 - Think With Your Heart

Did you know high blood pressure, cholesterol and atherosclerosis all increase your risk of Alzheimer's? It's true and lesser known homocysteine is also a known risk factor for heart disease and it also increases your risk of Alzheimer's. A 2021 analysis discovered higher levels of homocysteine and lower levels of folic acid in people with dementia and Alzheimer's. The B vitamins folic acid, B6 and B12 are key to controlling homocysteine. One interesting study followed 370 people over the age of 75 for three years. The ones with normal levels of folic acid and B12 were the least likely to develop Alzheimer's.

Key # 2 - Blood sugar and Your Brain

The latest research has discovered a link between diabetes and the risk of dementia and Alzheimer's. A 2019 review and meta analysis of 144 studies found that diabetes increases the risk of cognitive impairment and dementia. Even pre-diabetes increased the risk of dementia. Taking steps to control blood sugar and insulin resistance reduces your risk of brain related issues. Ideal fasting glucose levels are 75-90 and Hemoglobin A1C levels should be below 5.7. Key factors to control blood sugar include: reduction of white flour and sugar products, maintaining your ideal weight, getting enough protein in your diet to modulate blood sugar and managing stress. Stress and lack of sleep also impact blood sugar levels.

Key # 3 - Alzheimer's and Antioxidants

People with Alzheimer's have significantly lower antioxidant activity. One important factor we don't hear much about is oxidative stress. The primary sources of oxidative stress include poor diet, tobacco and alcohol, environmental toxins and UV radiation. When you don't have enough antioxidants in your diet to offset free radical damage to the cells, it increases the risk of many chronic diseases, including Alzheimer's. Antioxidants from a variety of colors in the diet is extremely protective. A long lasting study found that 2,000 IU of Vitamin E a day significantly slows functional decline in people who already have Alzheimer's. Vitamin E was able to delay clinical progression by 19 percent a year.
